My name Dave , and I have been in the professional lawncare industry for 20 years. I currently consult and sell lawncare products to professional lawncare operators & golf courses.

The Purpose of this blog is to assist you (the homeowner) in your quest for a beautiful lawn and landscape. I will attempt to debunk many common myths I encounter every day from professionals and homeowners alike. The world is filled with bad lawncare advice being dispensed from a number of sources. Unknowledgable garden center help , your neighbor , your father in law and sometimes even the man cutting your lawn.

All this does is confuse you, and you end up wasting time and money on products that wont work or you didnt need in the first place. It can be frustrating, I know.

I will also help recommend products that actually work. Most of the time , these are the same products professionals use when taking care of your lawn. Lawncare isn’t rocket science, but the right product and timing is crucial for success.

Feel free to post a comment or ask a specific question if needed, and check back often for timely updates.

A note about my lawncare philosophy

My philosophy isn’t what you might think from someone that primarily sold Professional lawncare products for 10 years.

I have a bit of a minimalist approach. Many people (including professionals) often times overapply fertilizers and pesticides to a lawn when there isn’t any actual need to. Grub killers are one of the worst offenders. Many people see a couple grubs and immediately proceed to buy some sort of grub control product to blast those suckers with (and often buy the wrong product). In all reality, most don’t have an actual grub problem or if they do, it is very contained and control products can be minimized to the actual area.

I am never an advocate of misusing pesticides on a lawn that may not even need it. It’s costly, irresponsible, and totally unneccessary.

Their are many lawncare products that can be used safely and effectively for the desired purpose. Usually these are low active ingredient prevention type products. These are products like crabgass preventers, grub preventers (as opposed to grub killers), and weed preventers for shrub beds. The benefits are great and save a lot of time and effort . They also reduce the need for additional controls later on, reducing the potential amount of actual controal products when problems arise later.

I am also a big proponent of Organic products. Certain organic products can be used in conjunction with traditional fertilizers and the benefits and results are great. During the year we will discuss certain products and strategies for incorporating these great products into any lawn or landscape project.

My goal here is to help educate and provide information on the proper products to use in certain situations. Often times when you visit a retail garden center , you are overwhelmed with a shelf full of widely different products. It’s hard to really understand which is the right one and often times the garden center help doesnt really have the expertise to provide you with the right advice and product.

I visit retail stores often and always check what kind of products are on the shelf. Some products are actually good, but many are useless or ineffective. The trick is to look at the active ingredients contained within the product. I can spot good and bad stuff because this is how I’ve made my living for 20 years. The same way you would’nt expect me to be able to do your job, I would’nt expect homeowners or even many professional to be able to identify the good and bad retail products.
This is why proper advice and products can save money , time , effort and frustration.

If you ever have a specific question about specific products or problems, please post a comment or ask a question. I will do my best to help..

  1. I recently started a website specializing in providing professional grade products to the do it yourself lawn care homeowner. I was wondering if you could take a look and provide some feedback as to what I might need to improve the site. I would also really appreciate a mention or a link to my products if you ever have the need. My site is domyownlawn.com.

    Thanks, JJ

  2. May I ask what region you live in? I recently moved to Western Washington, and am trying to learn how to create a nice lawn in this unique climate.
